Software used for an eBook reader - Top Question List (9)

An eBook is a digital media equivalent of a paper book. And, this digital book needs software if you want to read eBooks. Most eBook readers support the standard software format of Adobe PDF (.pdf). One needs to install Adobe Digital Editions (DE) on your PC/laptop (for DRM-protection) to be able to read at all, but it works nicely. Adobe DE can be downloaded for free on the website of Adobe.
The open standard ePub (.epub) is not accepted by all devices, e.g. the Kindle of Amazon. However, it is predicted, that ePub will be the standard, as it provides more reading flexibility compared to PDF. Adobe helped ePub with a DRM-protected version of ePub, called the Adobe-ePub. Suppliers of eBook readers are enthusiastic to support this format.
Mobipocket (.mobi) was as open standard format based on XHTML and accepted JavaScript. Amazon accepted Mobipocket as the only standard, but ended supporting this format end 2009. Amazon continued with its own AMZ-format. Besides the Amazon Kindle, most eBook readers do not support Mobipocket or AMZ.
Most tablets use HTML as this provides the ability to download eBooks directly via internet and adopts links in the text. Cheaper eBook readers do not support HTML.
Fictionbook (.fb2) gained popularity in Russia. It describes the structure of a document and is convenient for automatic processing and collection management. FB2 contains only one XML-like file, where ePub contains more. Fictionbook is not accepted by many eReaders.
A simpler format is TXT (.txt), which only provides plain text. Most eBook readers support TXT.
Fortunately eBook readers adopt more and more formats, when time goes by and conversion of formats is possible too. Most conversion programs convert to PDF, ePub or AMZ.
Linux is a common operating system for several eBook readers. Besides Linux, Windows, Mac OS X and Google Android are used. Choose the operating system your PC is using, as you want to connect your PC with your eBook reader.

Store your eBooks - Top Question List (8)

If you like to store all your eBooks on your eBook reader, you might go for an eBook reader with a higher storage space. The smallest eBook readers can store more than 300 eBooks (e.g. Sony Pocket Edition), but you will find out, that it is easier to add eBooks than paper books to your collection. So, you will gain more of them. An extended (micro) SD-card or a memory stick could a nice solution.
And ask yourself the following question: Where do you want to store bought eBooks, free eBooks or eBook you lend from the library?

Compatibility of an eBook reader - Top Question List (7)

Some eBook readers do not support the free/open ePub format, like the Kindle of Amazon. Most ebook readers accept PDF, but this not accepting ePub, Mobipocket or another format does limit the possibility to get your eBooks from eBook publishers you prefer.
Neither do all eBook readers support more than one computer. If you own a PC and a laptop, choose carefully where you like to store (copies of) your eBooks. EBooks are Digital Right Management-protected (DRM), which means, that there are restrictions on sharing eBooks. By the way, making a copy or printing an eBook can be considered as “sharing” by some eBook publishers. The Nook of Barnes and Nobles has the option to share eBooks with another Nook for a limited timeframe. So, how compatible does your ebook reader need to be?

E-ink or LCD screen of an eBook reader - Top Question List (6)

Yes, with E-ink (it's name of the company who makes e-ink as well) you can read a book in the sun. The product E-ink was introduced as the best digital alternative for paper. And now in color, it supposed to be even a better alternative. However, an LCD eBook reader is always in full color, has better color experience, turns pages a lot quicker and is cheaper. An LCD-screen is about $100 cheaper than the e-Ink variant. And yes, you have to sit in the shadow with an LCD-screen to be able to read what is on the screen.
LCD is evolving as well. Nowadays you see the evolution of High-Definition LCD (HD-LCD) with extraordinary brightness.
Mobile phones with e-ink are a rarity. In 2008 the (Casio) Hitachi W61H phone was the first phone with e-ink (e-paper technology), but it never became a hit. Most phones use LCD.

Color or Black and White screen of an eBook reader - Top Question List (5)

Do you need a color screen?
What experience do you need with an eBook reader? Are you satisfied with black and white, like you are used to with a paper book or do you prefer color. Plainly, for reading a book it is not necessary to read in color. In fact, many people prefer to read in black and white as it gives the best reading experience.
But, if you are reading eBooks with a lot of pictures (let’s say a comic eBook), you would prefer a device that has the ability to show these colors to you. We expect that in a few years time you will not find an only-black-and-white screen device anymore. Look at the evolution of television-screens. Do you want to wait for that or do you want one now?

Price of an eBook reader - Top Question List (4)

The five types of eBook readers (see the first article of the Top Question List) have different prices. Due to competition the prices will drop, but not dramatically. The size, the brand, the functionality and the usage of e-Ink are the most important figures that determine the price of an eBook reader.
The 5-6 inch eBook readers vary in the price of $100 (e.g. Kobo, Sony Pocket Reader) to $300. The 9-10 inch eBook readers will be found at around $500 till $1000 (e.g. Sony Daily Edition). We do not mention the prices of mobile phones, PDA's, or tables, as most of them are combined with a paid subscription.

Design of an eBook reader - Top Question List (3)

Design has a price. Look e.g. at the Apple computer; great design, but they more expensive than a regular pc. It's the same story for eBook readers. The Kindle of Amazon was one on the first eBook readers with a keyboard. At the introduction, it looked great. Beautiful design.

As touch screens are standard now, the design moves up to larger screens. COOL-er introduced more colorfull hardware, as the standard color of an eBook reader was grey. More and more manufactures provide color / design eBook readers. Apple has the great looking device at the moment with their Apple, but who will follow to be more trendy? Sony? HP? Microsoft?

Multi-functionality of an eBook reader - Top Question List (2)

In this second article we discuss the multi-functionality of an eBook reader. This is an important, because what can the ereader do. What features does the eBook reader have and what do you need? Do you want to have a device that only reads books or a multi-functional device? A standard eBook reader (like a Sony Reader Pocket edition)is cheaper than the multifunctional one. Multifunctional can vary from an included MP3-players (Sony Reader Touch) and abilities to make notes in an eBook, up to full computer functionalities like the tabled PC’s of Apple (iPad). The navigation of the ebook reader differs. Swiping a page of an eBook cannot be done on every eBook reader.
Note, that not every eBook reader can download eBooks directly via an eBook store as they do not have an internet / WIFI-connection. Those eReaders need a computer to download the eBooks and transfer the eBooks to the eBook reader.
More functions in an ereader need stronger batteries. Stronger batteries are bigger and make an eBook reader heavier. So, if you like to move around with your eBook reader, that that in mind as well. The evolution of smaller, but stronger batteries is going rapidly. This will have positive effect on the multi-functionality of eReaders.

The hand-held eBook reader device - Top Question List (1)

We received several questions if we could give an advice about the perfect eReader. We know that it is a difficult decision to make, especially as there are so many of them. In the articles "Top Question List" we help you making a good decision. This Top Question List provides you questions you should ask yourself, before you buy an ebook reader.
The first article of the Top Question List is: The hand-held eBook reader device. What types are there?
We divide them in five categories eReaders.
1. The standard size of an eBook is 5 - 6 inches. This is the eBook reader that you can carry around all the time and has a comfortable reading size for reading an eBook.
2. The larger size is the 9-10 inch eBook reader. This is an eBook reader that would help you at work. The larger size provides more visible text and easier usage, but is less mobile as you cannot put it in your pocket. You need to bring it in a (computer) bag.
3. The third option is a mobile phone or PDA. Technically these are not eReaders, but more and more mobile phones and PDA’s provide the ability to read eBooks. A screen of a mobile phone can go up to 3 inches, like the iPhone.
4. Small laptop computer and tablet pc’s can be used as an eBook reader, too. Basically they are not eBook readers, either, but reading an eBook on these devices is a perfect feature they provide. The sizes of their screens vary from 5 inch to 10 inch. PC’s are not considered as eBooks as they are not hand-held.
5. The last devices are the mobile game computer, like the Nintendo or traffic devices like your Garmin or TomTom. The Gameboy has eReader cards containing eBooks. These types of devices are rarely used to read an eBook.

Stieg Larsson The Girl who Kicked the Hornets via Read-an-ebook.com
The Swedish title literally means "The Air Castle That Exploded." Luftslott ("air castle") is used in Swedish to designate a pipe dream. The US edition, published on May 25, 2010, changes the English-language title to The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest, with "hornet" in the singular form.[3]
(wikipedia)
Stieg Larsson was the top European writer in 2010, according to an analysis of bestsellers charts published in UK, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, and Sweden.
The Swede beat the American writer Dan Brown into second place even though Brown's The Lost Symbol was a top ten hit in seven territories, four more than Larsson's Millennium trilogy.
Ken Follett was the only British writer to make the top 10 list, with Fall of Giants charting in five countries: the UK, Italy, Spain, France and Germany. Brown was one of two Americans in the top 10 list, with the thriller writer also joined by vampire specialist Stephenie Meyer.
Sandwiched between Brown and Meyer in third place, was Tatiana de Rosnay, the Paris-born writer of Sarah’s Key, originally written in English and published in the UK by John Murray. Her new book A Secret Kept will be published in the UK on 15th April by Pan Macmillan.
Overall, eight of the top 25 European fiction authors wrote in English, and 17 in other languages. Half of the list presents authors who only charted in their country of origin. Sweden and the US were the dominant sources of authors, with five each in the top 25. But Sweden had more in the top 10, three, Larsson, Läckberg, and Kepler.
This analysis is a computation from author's performances over the past 11 months, between January and November 2010, based on monthly compilations of the top 10 bestselling lists (fiction) of The Bookseller, buchreport/Spiegel Bestsellerliste, El Cultural, Livres Hebdo/Ipsos, Svensk Bokhandel, and a combined top 20 fiction and non fiction list for Italy provided by Informazioni Editoriali, and of the Netherlands by GfK/CPNB De Bestseller. The chart was compiled by consultant Ruediger Wischenbart.
